Is a person’s IQ permanent?

There used to be a time when a person just takes an intelligence test once and the resulting score is used to define him and his potential for learning for the rest of his life. But IQ is actually a variable number. It can increase or decrease over time, depending largely on the environmental influences around the individual. Improving one’s IQ can easily be done by doing brain exercises, playing strategy games, and reading more.

Are standard intelligence tests accurate?

While it may be very difficult to pinpoint exactly how intelligent someone is based on a limited number of test questions, standard intelligence tests have been designed specifically to measure four areas of intelligence: mathematical, visual-spatial, linguistic and logical. So although an accurate measure of the total intelligence of a person would be hard to determine, the scores in these four areas are fairly accurate.

Is it pointless to know your IQ?

Admittedly, there are some disadvantages to knowing one’s IQ, specifically, if one becomes too obsessed with improving his score that he fails to give priority to the more important things in life. But knowing your IQ can actually be a valuable thing. It can show you your strengths and your weaknesses in the various aspects of intelligence. This knowledge can guide you in determining a career path, for instance, and it can also alert you of the areas that you need to improve on. kublai khan
